Under Embargo until 1st November 00.01am UK time: The Royal Mint, official maker of UK coins, has today revealed a collectable 50p coin to celebrate ten years since the release of The Snowman and The Snowdog, the animated sequel to the late Raymond Briggs’ timeless picture book and film adaption, The Snowman.
The collectable 50p coin celebrating the heart-warming story of The Snowman and The Snowdog will see Her Late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait feature on the obverse (heads) side of the coin.
Following the popularity of The Snowman™ coin series, the 2022 design tells the story of a boy, Billy, who discovers a snowman-making kit hidden under his bedroom floorboards. Billy builds a snowman and, with a little leftover snow, a snowdog. That night, the two come to life and Billy joins them on an enchanting adventure.
For the fifth consecutive year, award-winning illustrator Robin Shaw has worked with The Royal Mint, to produce the design celebrating The Snowman and The Snowdog. The Royal Mint has introduced innovative digital colour printing technology to bring The Snowman and The Snowdog design to life, keeping true to the hand drawn, nostalgic quality of Robin Shaw’s original sketches.
Rebecca Morgan, Director of Collector Services at The Royal Mint said, “The Royal Mint first celebrated the heart-warming tale of The Snowman on official UK coins in 2018. Today, we are delighted to introduce another collectable 50p coin to the series celebrating ten years since the release of The Snowman and The Snowdog. This year’s design is just as charming as ever and features an exclusive design by award-winning illustrator Robin Shaw.
The Snowman and The Snowdog coin beautifully captures the festive magic of a tale that has become a much-loved classic. We hope collectors will love the design as much as we do at The Royal Mint with the coin making the ideal Christmas gift for loved ones.”
Speaking about the design, award-winning animator and illustrator Robin Shaw said, “It’s a joy to be revisiting The Snowdog after 10 years. I’ve always been rather pleased when he’s around and imagined him keeping The Snowman company when we’re not looking.”
This is the fifth commemorative coin from The World of The Snowman released by The Royal Mint in collaboration with Snowdog Enterprises Ltd and officially licensed by Penguin Ventures (part of Penguin Random House UK), with the first coin released in 2018.

Recent themes have included David Bowie, Winnie the Pooh, Decimalisation and Team GB. Each commemorative coin is carefully struck up to three times in order to create a superbly detailed finish, and ensuring each one meets the standards The Royal Mint is famous for.

About THE WORLD OF THE SNOWMAN™
Originally published in 1978, THE SNOWMAN™ was created and illustrated as a wordless picture book by the late Raymond Briggs. Beautifully illustrated with pencil and crayon, the story follows a boy, James, who builds a snowman in his garden one winter’s day. That night The Snowman comes to life and a magical adventure begins.
Producer John Coates adapted the THE SNOWMAN as an animation, which launched on Channel 4 in the channel’s inaugural year in 1982. The film was a huge success, earning an Academy Award nomination and winning a BAFTA TV award. It has been repeated every Christmas on Channel 4 in the 40 years since.
In 2012, the highly anticipated sequel, was announced - THE SNOWMAN™ AND THE SNOWDOG premiered on Channel 4 on 24th December 2012 and was seen by over 10 million viewers during that festive period. THE SNOWMAN AND THE SNOWDOG takes place in the same house that features in THE SNOWMAN and tells the story of a boy, Billy, who discovers a snowman-making kit hidden under the floorboards of his new home on Christmas Eve. Billy builds a snowman and, with a little leftover snow, a snowdog. As the clock strikes midnight, the two come to life and Billy joins them on a magical, fun-filled journey across the skies to attend a party filled with snowmen and Father Christmas himself.
During 2022 Penguin Random House Children’s will be celebrating Ten Years of Friendship and Fun with THE SNOWMAN AND THE SNOWDOG as well as marking 40 years of THE SNOWMAN animation. We will be paying tribute to Raymond Briggs via a dedicated campaign comprising a series of special events and digital activations to ensure that THE WORLD OF THE SNOWMAN remains a central part of festive family festive traditions.
THE WORLD OF THE SNOWMAN continues to enjoy an international audience with global broadcast of the animation, along with an array of publishing from Puffin and consumer products; live and immersive experiences managed by Penguin Ventures. Snowman Enterprises Limited (SEL) is a Penguin Random House company.
