The Royal Mint has today (11 March 2024) launched a regal tribute to Buckingham Palace, honouring the landmark London residence of the British monarch.
The £5 coin, which has been produced in collaboration with Royal Collection Trust, symbolises centuries of British history and tradition. Designed by artist Henry Gray, whose portfolio includes artwork for coins celebrating Alexander Graham Bell and The Who, the coin’s reverse skilfully portrays the grand front-elevation of the Palace, proudly flying the Royal Standard. The coin’s border is inspired by intricate architectural details found within the Palace’s interior.
The Buckingham Palace coin was originally released as part of the 2024 Annual Sets, which is comprised of five commemorative coins celebrating iconic figures, establishments, and organisations central to British culture. Now, royal enthusiasts can purchase the majestic collectable as an individual piece.
Rebecca Morgan, Director of Collector Services at The Royal Mint, said: "We're thrilled to launch the Buckingham Palace £5 coin, which encapsulates the grandeur and significance of one of Britain's most iconic landmarks. This release is a testament to The Royal Mint's dedication to preserving and celebrating our cultural heritage."
Henry Gray, Coin Designer, said: “Buckingham Palace is one of Britain’s most well-known and iconic buildings; inside and out it is enveloped with complex and intricate ornament. I needed to retain some of the essential detail that communicates Buckingham Palace’s architectural narrative whilst rendering it convincingly and recognisably at numismatic scale.
“I was spoilt for choice; such is the density of ornament on display. After trialling multiple options, featuring both interior and exterior details, the pattern on the balustrade from the Grand Staircase was the most successful for the outside of the coin. The iconic frontal elevation of the Palace is the only view that truly communicates the building with gravitas.”
The Buckingham Palace 2024 Coin is available in a variety of editions, including Brilliant Uncirculated, silver Proof and gold Proof editions, offering collectors a diverse range of options to acquire a cherished piece of British history.
