More than two centuries have passed since the guinea was last minted, yet its allure remains undiminished. This iconic coin, steeped in history and symbolism, is celebrated for its unique value of one pound and one shilling, as well as its association with refinement, gentility, and good taste. For centuries, the guinea served as Britain’s principal gold coin. In 2013, its legacy was honored with the release of the £2 "Anniversary of the Golden Guinea" coin.
The reverse of this commemorative £2 coin, designed by sculptor Anthony Smith, features a recreation of one of the most renowned guinea designs: the Spade Guinea. This design, associated with King George III, showcases a shield resembling a spade, which earned it its nickname. The Spade Guinea became highly popular, particularly among the country gentry, and was even reproduced in brass long after its circulation ended. The edge inscription of the £2 coin includes a tribute from writer Stephen Kemble: "What is a guinea? 'Tis a splendid thing."
