What are the rules for destroying coinage?

Under Section 10 of the Coinage Act 1971, you must not melt down or break up any metal coin that is currently in circulation in the UK, or that has ceased to be current since 16 May 1969, unless you have a licence from HM Treasury.

You can find further information in HM Treasury’s guidance on coinage and banknote issues here.
