Are bars and digital products Capital Gains Tax exempt?

In the UK, gold bars and digital precious metal products do not benefit from the legal tender exemption that applies to certain qualifying UK coins, so gains on these products held personally may be subject to Capital Gains Tax.

However, investments held within a registered pension scheme, such as a SIPP or SSAS, are generally exempt from Capital Gains Tax. The Royal Mint’s Gold for Pensions programme allows eligible SIPP and SSAS customers to hold physical gold bullion bars and/or DigiGold within their pension.
